Road test: Mazda3 SkyActiv-G

The battle to sell Golf-sized family hatchbacks is the keenest in the business. Up against such strong contenders as the Focus, Astra and VW, Mazda has come out fighting with no fewer than 36 versions of its new third-generation Mazda3.

There are 21 hatchbacks and 15 fastbacks priced from £16,695 to £23,345 and a choice of three SkyActiv petrol and diesel engines. This is a much more elegant car than its predecessor, with flowing curves, like a scaled down Mazda6 with which it shares a deep front grille. The cabin is well finished and head and legroom and boot space are all generous.

Biggest seller will be the 120PS petrol model with a two-litre four-cylinder engine — Mazda does not share the competitors’ view that smaller engine sizes are the way to go. A 165PS two-litre petrol and a 150PS 2.2-litre turbo diesel are also available.

The petrol engines are almost inaudible at tickover and the car feels stable and well balanced on the road, although road noise is intrusive on some surfaces. Of the two body styles, the hatchback is a little longer, wider and lower than before, and the fastback has a longer rear overhang and a larger but flatter boot. Both versions cost the same.

The diesel-powered car feels brisk but slightly heavier than the petrol versions. Mazda claims 72.4mpg, which matches most of the opposition and comfortably beats the Focus.

It claims the 120PS petrol car manages a respectable 55.4mpg with a manual gearbox and 50.4 as an auto.

This vital car for Mazda is a good step forward, being elegant, economical and well equipped. The decision over which family hatch to go for just got harder.
