Even open-face motorcycle helmet devotees may soon want something warmer and more waterproof as autumn wears on, and Shark’s versatile new Explore-R could be it. It’s two helmets in one; a stylish, premium full-face tourer with conventional visor on one hand and edgy, motocross-style lid with peak and goggles on the other. Transforming it from one to the other takes just seconds.
As a tourer, it works brilliantly. The lining materials feel great and the visor can be locked slightlyopen to boost air-flow. Fully closed, it vents nicely, there’s a good, easily-activated flip-down sun visor and the visor opening is laudably wide, for good vision. On a soaking wet three-day tour, the Explore-R performed well, proving comfy and stable at high speed. I fitted the Sharktooth Interphone bluetooth system (£199) to relay sat-nav instructions, too.
With peak and goggles in place it’s a very different helmet indeed. Switching is easy enough; the peak goes on quickly and the visor pops off in seconds.
My favourite feature — yet to be fully tested — is a fold-away windproof neck guard that can be tucked into your jacket.
