Following 18 years of declining popularity among UK drivers, however, “British” brands accounted for less than 20 per cent of all cars on the road in 2010. Over the same 18-year period, German car sales increased significantly, making up 19 per cent of all cars on UK roads and more than doubling as a proportion. In 2011, German cars finally took the crown, says AXA, and their popularity has continued to rise, accounting for more than one in five (22 per cent) cars on UK roads in the third quarter of 2014.
