Is it OK to wear trainers with a suit?
Yes, especially in summer, but terms and conditions apply. It is not OK to wear gym trainers with a business suit en route to the office. They must be cool trainers — we’re talking clean minimalist white leather tennis shoes such as Adidas Stan Smiths, Common Projects or Converse Jack Purcells. And the rest of the outfit must ‘agree’. Trainers don’t work with a structured suit and a stiff collar and tie. Go for lightweight, unlined, soft-shouldered summer tailoring (Folk or Oliver Spencer) worn with a T-shirt or buttoned-up shirt sans tie.

I spy an emerging menswear hub in Mayfair. It started with Rake (ready-to-wear tailoring), then came Duke Street Emporium. Now Patrick Grant’s E Tautz is about to set up shop there and the London tailor Thom Sweeney is around the corner. Once the Beaumont hotel opens in September it’ll become the place to be.
