It totally depends on what kind of work you do and what look you’re going for. Casual: consider a backpack from cult Japanese brand Porter-Yoshida & Co. Smart-casual: try a waxed cotton tote from Jack Spade or Want Les Essentiels. Formal: I’d suggest a soft-sided leather briefcase. You ought to have two: a black one to go with black shoes, and a brown one for brown shoes. Berluti is the gold standard here, but I also like Mulberry’s Heathcliffe briefcase in brown, while the cycling brand Brooks England does a black one called Eton that also doubles as a smart backpack.
