Will a black suit suffice for a black-tie awards do?

No, it won’t. This so-called ‘Hollywood black tie’ has crept too far. If the dress code says black tie, then you should wear a satin-lapelled tuxedo, a crisp white Marcella shirt (no wing collars), jet-black socks and highly polished black shoes. And I’m advocating a return to a proper DIY bow tie rather than a black necktie. Gieves & Hawkes (above), Hardy Amies or Ede & Ravenscroft will look after you. Sure, there will be people at the awards who bend these old-school rules, but you’ll look like the real winner on the night.

Leonardo di Caprio, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal …what is sprouting out of your head? The male topknot is a top not; a hair don’t rather than a hair do. But it’s a trend that, worryingly, seems to be growing. I say we cut it off – now. Unless you’re a samurai warrior, that is.
