Is it OK to wear flip-flops around town?
In a word, no. In his Five Easy Lessons in How to Be a Modern Gentleman, Tom Ford says: ‘Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate.’ Now, while there are bigger sartorial evils in this world than flip-flops — deep-V T-shirts, Crocs or Rylan Clark, for example — Uncle Tom is spot-on. Havaianas should not be worn more than 500m from a beach or pool. These are the most acceptable summer shoes: any Supergas, navy boat shoes, suede loafers or espadrilles — currently two pairs for £15 at Office.
