Pocket squares: when
to fold and when to flourish?
The Mad Men pocket square is precisely folded, with either a
straight edge or in triangular peaks. Best worn with a suit, it should
coordinate with your shirt and/or the minor colour in your tie. A Great
Gatsby-style silk handkerchief is more flamboyant. Paired with a suit or blazer
and an open-neck shirt, it's a chance to play with pattern and colour so it
doesn't have to match. Pinch the handkerchief in the centre and tuck in the
loose corners so it spills out of the pocket. Drake's (above), Richard James
and Paul Smith are your go-tos. It's never been hipper to be (pocket) square.
Actually, 'love' doesn't quite cover it. Rake is among my
favourite tailoring brands: the debonair kings of louche lounge and evening
wear. So I was delighted to hear that it has just opened its first
store/installation, where everything is for sale — even the furniture, the
lighting and the books. In Mayfair. Naturally. 77 Duke Street, W1
