How do I know what pattern shirts and ties go together?
Start with the shirt and choose a tie with a similar secondary colour in its pattern. Your tie should be darker than your shirt. Don’t closely match patterns — the scales should contrast. Pair large patterns (wide-stripe tie) with smaller ones (gingham shirt) so that they don’t ‘fight’. If in doubt, wear a plain shirt with a patterned tie or vice versa. If your suit is patterned (eg, pinstripe or check), then either your tie or shirt should be plain, otherwise the overall look could be too busy.
