Have you been away recently?
The last proper holiday I had was in Bali for my 40th birthday last year. I proposed to my wife there and we had an impromptu Hindu blessing ceremony on the beach. After ten years together I think she was pretty surprised, but it was the right time and a beautiful setting.

What was the last gig you saw?
Prince at The O². It was great to see an artist looking back on his career, not trying to sell a record, just celebrating the music. He really is the musician's musician.

What are your secret London addresses?
I have a serious affection for Whole Foods Market. I think the idea of an organic supermarket is fantastic.

Kensington Square Kitchen is one of my favourite hangouts. I love their attention to detail and the familiarity of the place.

Matches in Notting Hill is where I buy most of my clothes. It's expensive but you pay for what you get.

Tom's Kitchen served me the first decent coffee I had in this country. You couldn't get good coffee in London in the late 1980s, and I am still a coffee snob who believes in drinking out of a china rather than a paper cup.

What advice would you give a tourist?
Avoid Oxford Street at all costs.

What's your life philosophy?
Jump, you might fly.

What would you save from a fire?
My children [Jemma, nine, and Zac, eight] - the rest isn't that important.

What's the best meal you've had in London?
Any time I have ever been to Zuma. It's a great upmarket Japanese; you can't beat it.

What is your earliest London memory?
Driving from Heathrow in 1987 with my manager for the London leg of my Neighbours PA tour. I had just come from New York and I remember being surprised at how low all the buildings seemed compared to the skyscrapers over there.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?
Pedestrianise Oxford Street, drop the price of rail travel, because at the moment it's still cheaper to get a taxi on short journeys, and make everywhere more cycle friendly.
