The Houses have always catered for the ‘have laptop, will travel’ generation, and there is barely a corner of any of the clubs that hasn’t been used as a pseudo office (though we’ve heard Istanbul is pretty empty nine-to-five, for anyone looking to hotdesk somewhere exotic and quiet next week). But, as useful for freelancers as a Soho House membership is, Nick Jones and co recognise that no one wants laptopping to take over from socialising — thus Soho Works was invented. The brand new flexible co-working space is housed just below Shoreditch House, and both members and non-members can rent desk space on a daily or monthly basis. ‘Unlike in the clubs, everything at Works is designed to help you get work done,’ explains Tanya Nathan, its director. ‘There are meeting rooms, there’s a photographic studio. You can even 3D-print if that’s your thing.’ Nathan was first hired seven years ago as Jones’ PA, ‘but I made it clear I wanted to be involved in projects, so Nick said, “OK, you can come to every meeting with me,” ’ she says. ‘He stuck by his word.’ Works also has a site in LA and one in Istanbul will open this year.
