The result is a halo-like glow, as if the light of a winter sunrise is hitting your hair at an angle. "It's like adding a sprinkle of fairy dust that softens the masculinity of a short hairstyle, plus it instantly lifts drab winter skin," says Jo.
It will last until the colour is cut out at your next haircut (around six weeks later). £40; www.johansford.com

BRING OUT YOUR BRUNETTE WITH ACCENT LIGHTING
The expert: Josh Wood at Real Hair Leading light: Hilary Swank Good for: Natural brunettes and those wanting to go darker
When it comes to dark hair, many mistakenly add colours that have never been there naturally. Josh identifies hidden tints in your natural colour and magnifies them.
"Brown and darkened hair can look flat, or worse, green, in harsh winter light," says Josh, who turned Hilary Swank's highlights to a chocolate brunette last week.
He blends classic foil and modern freehand painting techniques to bring out the naturally occurring gleams of gold, bronze and amber in your hair that you never knew existed.
Every accent complements colours in your eyes, brows and skin, adding depth to your hairstyle and bringing light back into your face. Colour at Realhair from £250; www.realhair.co.uk
The expert: Neil Moodie using Love Hair Extensions Leading lights: Kylie, Keira Knightley and Mischa Barton Good for: Anyone with fine hair and/or flat-looking colour.
Bumble & Bumble stylist Neil Moodie works with celebrities who would rather use clip-ins than commit to permanent colour.
"Choose clip-ins two to three shades lighter than your existing tone. Blondes should stick to cooler extensions while brunettes can opt for warmer, red tones," says Neil.
Ensure your extensions are invisible by sectioning off the top layer of hair around the parting.
Backcomb the roots of the layer beneath before attaching clip-ins at intervals all the way around the curve of the head. Undo the top section and brush.
Product partner: Love 100 per cent ethically-sourced human hair clip-ins from £12 for 14 inches. Keep them good as new with the Easy 2 Extend haircare range from £2.49; www.lovehairextensions.com.
