Learn to dance like your favourite diva

I'm standing in a huge dance studio with mirrors on all sides, feeling like I'm in Fame. As my teacher Shaun guides me through some basic warm-up exercises to prepare our muscles I begin to hear the first beats of Beyoncé's Crazy in Love, which I am here to learn the moves to. Minutes later I am learning how to shimmy and shake my hips before Shaun cranks up the volume and we try it in time to the music.

It's slow-paced, but as I'm trying it out as a beginner in a private class Shaun takes me back over each move until I've got it right and we begin to build a routine, step by step.

I have come to the Central YMCA Centre near Tottenham Court Road to try out a new fitness class called Seen on Screen, where anyone can learn how to dance like the stars they see on screen every day - Beyoncé, Rihanna or the Pussycat Dolls.

The brains behind it is dance professional Bonnie Parsons, who at just 23 has already danced in New York and LA and came up with the idea when she spotted a gap in London's get-fit market for "anyone who wants to learn to dance like the stars and get fit while having fun".

But most importantly, she tells me, the aim of the class is to make people, specifically women, feel confident in themselves.

Now based in London, where she says no other class offers the same thing, Parsons employs six "industry professionals", each of whom has performed with the pop stars whose routines they re-enact for Seen on Screen. Each teacher is matched to a specific class, depending on what their specialism is.

Meanwhile, I get back to learning to dance like Beyoncé. So far I haven't broken into a sweat but I am told that a harder session can burn up to 400 calories, which makes it worth it when you think about what you could dance off on a night out.

Almost 90 minutes has whizzed by without me realising and I can definitely feel the burn in my arms and torso. I didn't manage to learn the whole routine but I'll be able to step more confidently onto the dance floor when I go out this Saturday.
