Dementia affects more than 47.5 million people worldwide, with symptoms including memory loss, disorientation and depression. As such, it’s set to be the biggest killer of the 21st century.

But a new Virtual Reality system hopes to transform the lives of people who suffer from dementia, by using a form of immersive therapy.

Using a simple VR headset, the system can project its users into a number of different calming environments, from wildlife-filled forests to beach scenes – a game-changer for those whose memories are failing them.

The system, which has been developed by Tribemix, is looking to bring this technology into more care homes.

‘This is happy tears by the way,’ said one woman, Ann, after she tried the new headset, and saw and heard seagulls by the sea. ‘This is magic what you do. I know it’s cameras, but it’s magic,’ she added.
