Hail Caesar! Patrick Cox on London's top dog

Caesar is my best friend. I take him everywhere. He was on the front row at the Burberry show last year and came to the Serpentine Summer Party. When we go to Scott's or Cecconi's for lunch, we sit together at one of the tables outside. I even drove to the Alps with him to go skiing and I take him shooting during the season.

Caesar has many fans. When I go away my friends fight over who's going to look after him. Sam Taylor-Wood's fiancé Aaron is completely in love with him. Liz Hurley also has dogs and Caesar goes on playdates with them at her home in Gloucestershire. But Liz's affection for Caesar does have its limits. Once, when we were staying at her house, she went to bed early. Caesar was pining and went to sniff around her door. She let him in, and he jumped into bed with her but he kept trying to stick his bum in her face. Unsurprisingly she kicked him out after 20 minutes. He does like to cuddle, in reverse.

I got Caesar three years ago. There were eight in the litter and I was actually looking for a girl. There was one little bitch I liked but then Caesar went and bit her and she ran away. He gave me his best 'Pick me!' look and I thought: 'That's the dog for me.'

Before I got him, David Furnish and Elton John had given me a toy bulldog for my birthday. I was off to India for a month, so they attached a note to the collar that read: 'Redeemable for a real bulldog when you get back.' Which makes them sort of Caesar's godparents (dogparents?). Elton Skypes Caesar now. They have a very good relationship.

I had always wanted a bulldog, because every one I had ever encountered in my life was sleeping. Perfect for me: I couldn't be doing with an overactive dog. We have a very relaxed schedule; I wake up at about 7am and work in bed while Caesar hides under the sheets.

When he comes to visit my shop, Cox Cookies & Cakes, he's so well-behaved. He is the Gandhi of the dog world. He's never growled or bitten anything (since his sister). We were in Harrods once and the head of PR saw him and rushed over to ask if I'd like to be the face of their new Pet Spa. I said, 'OK,' and she said, 'No, not you, the dog!'

I'm not one to make life plans, but I definitely see myself at 60 living in the country with Caesar and five or six other bulldogs. He's getting a little brother soon.
