But when I ask about relationships, she's coy and squirms and wriggles when I ask for a name. When Melua's three-year relationship with Luke Pritchard of The Kooks ended in 2006, she admitted, 'we have slowly broken each other's hearts'. But since then she's been linked to a woman: Lara Bloom, a 28-year-old photographer she met in California. So is she now going out with a girl or a boy? 'Better not answer that one,' she replies, narrowing heavily kohled hazel eyes, and confesses to loving 'the enigma' and fun of an uncertain sexuality.
She also seeks to be an enigma in her singing. 'I definitely think there is time for me to develop musically,' she says and then continues: 'Sometimes I do think, "Oh, what if I die?" And that would be terrible because of all the things I haven't done, all the things I'm maybe still not ready for.' Macabre thoughts for a 24-year-old, I think. But she says: 'Everyone could die. I love death because you know it's going to happen, you just don't know when or how. There's a comfort in that. I find it weird that people over here are so afraid of ageing and death, and you just can't be. It's like your best friend: it will wrap its arms around you eventually and embrace you, and that's it. You're gone.'
It appears that Melua is a much deeper, darker character than she first appears. On the other hand, she still keeps the childish tastes of the girl who sings pretty little songs (cf: 'If You Were a Sailboat' from the 2007 album Pictures) and gets her kicks playing with a doll's house. 'I bought a doll's house for myself, and I'm obsessed with it,' she confesses. 'I sweat over it. A doll's house is such a magical thing. And you know what, I'm going to deck it all out for Halloween.' The people in her doll's house all have names, and she's going to dress up some of the children like characters from the horror movie The Orphanage. 'It's a control-freak thing,' she muses. 'Maybe it's because I didn't have any toys growing up.'
