Gael García Bernal: I’m addicted to avocados

The Mexican heart-throb started acting as a one-year-old, and is best known for playing Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries. Now appearing in the returning Amazon Prime Video hit Mozart in the Jungle, he lives in Buenos Aires

FASHION

Motorcycle Diaries had the best costumes — that battered jacket and those linen shirts. I wear linen shirts in real life, too, and I have a nice, simple number I got handed down. As a father, you just stop buying stuff for yourself. It’s all for the kids.

FOOD

I’m addicted to avocados and I’ll put them with anything, particularly chillies. Can you imagine if they became extinct? That would be like the apocalypse, no?

DÉCOR

Little remnants from everywhere I’ve been are scattered around my home. I collect rocks in a weird way, with stones from around the world as mementos. I’ve also got three haranas, which are little guitars. You only need [to know] three or four chords to play them, so they’re great when you have friends round. I’ve had 30 people gathered around me just singing along.

FITNESS

I like running a lot and I play in a very amateur football league. I don’t have a trademark celebration; I just celebrate a lot. I like to imagine there’s a big stadium — but I guess that’s the actor in me.

FILM

There are so many actors I could pick out as my favourite. I love Juliette Binoche, and there’s a wonderful Brazilian actor called Wagner Moura who I’m a fan of. Emma Stone is incredible, too. She was amazing in Birdman. What a film that was!

PEOPLE

Most of my phone conversations are with my kids. I read them stories, I read them anything. We have those little conversations a father can only have with his children, when we just catch up.

TECH

HeyHey is my favourite app. It’s like Instagram but for sound recordings, with little soundbites from people’s days. We spend far too much time looking down at our phones, so it’s nice to have your head up while you listen to what other people have uploaded. I also couldn’t go without FotMob, which brings me my football scores. UNAM in the Mexican League are the only team for me. Pumas!

MUSIC

I’m quite into my funk, but then I’m quite into my everything. I’ll tell you the song at the top of my iTunes, which might be a terrible idea. For some reason, it’s this song called ‘Je t’aime’ by Staff Benda Bilili, a band from the Congo. They’ve got a lot of funk to them.
