Meet Savile Row’s first master female tailor

Suit makers have lined London’s famous Savile Row for over 200 years. But for the first time last month, a woman opened up shop on the street, which has been dominated by men.

“I was very pleased to see my name above the door,” explained Kathryn Sargent as she stood behind the counter in her store.

“But I almost try to not get too excited about it because it’s still taking time to sink in.”

Ms Sargent, who has been working in the industry for 20 years, branched out on her own in 2012.

In addition to this new shop at 37 Savile Row, she also has her flagship atelier in Mayfair.

But while Ms Sargent may be the street’s first official female business owner, she says that women have long played an integral role in the area.

“Savile Row is historically a man’s world, but there’s always been women behind the scenes, in the houses, working on the garments that are made for their clients.”
