Go green for spring colour

Before you accuse us tedious fashion folk of hopping on the bandwagon of another trend that only a supermodel could possibly look good in, listen up. For once we bring you something that really will work on anyone: green.

Plain old humble green in any shade or tone that happens to take your fancy. Refreshing, isn't it? The gods of fashion are throwing us a favour in the form of a colour that neither terrifies us nor demands that we have the complexion of a swarthy A-lister to stand a chance of pulling it off.

The beauty of this new green movement is its diversity. It's not just bottle or lime variations of the shade that will send you to the top of the fashion stakes this season: you can opt for a more subtle racing-green or even indulge your inner Nu-Raver with a flash of fluoro.

Even style barometer Kate Moss agrees — she was a vision in a floor-length emerald green dress when she opened the Topshop store in New York earlier this month.

It was on the spring/summer catwalks that green first fell back into favour with fashion. Alber Elbaz knotted and draped organza to create beautiful dresses in Granny Smith shades for his Lanvin collection, while Thakoon opted for jersey fabrics in teal. In London, Erdem used hues of lemon-grass and mint to create his floral gowns while Christopher Kane returned to his grass-roots, teaming his trademark leopard-print jumpers with skirts in leafy-green shades so luscious they looked good enough to eat.

Green shoots can be spotted on the high street, too. If you're lucky enough to have caught some Easter sunshine, try French Connection for sludgegreen shorts and Zara for jersey-tops in emerald — both shades look great on sun-kissed skin.

Those with paler complexions should stick to lighter tones. COS has some lovely silk dresses in peppermint. Alternatively, if it's just a flash of colour you're after, head to LK Bennett for its great range of basic knits and accessories in apple-green and lime.
