As iconic Sixties model Jean Shrimpton - played by Doctor Who's Karen Gillan - hits our screens in BBC4's new drama We'll Take Manhattan tomorrow, the style pin-up and her iconic eye make-up is back in vogue.

Models sporting the Shrimp's signature underlined eye were also spotted on Mario Schwab's spring/summer 2012 catwalks.

"Create an aerodynamic, Shrimpton-like shape that lifts the eye by mirroring the curve of the liner beneath the eye," says MAC director of UK artistry, Terry Barber.

Get the look: Apply MAC Eye Kohl in Black Smolder, £14 (maccosmetics.co.uk), to the upper lash line. Repeat with a thick line just below the base of the lower lashes.

The Eighties IconThe David Bowie Life on Mars look of colourfully lidded eyes returned in a more precise version at Louise Gray's S/S shows. Models were made up with dramatic flashes of aquamarine.

To revisit this look with a modern twist, try turquoise - less retro than blue - and nail this summer's love of all things sherbet at the same time.

Get the look: Add a thin line of Urban Decay's 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner in Siren, £14 (hqhair.com), to the upper lashes and dot L'Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Coconut Shake on the inner corner of the eye for added wide-eyed appeal.

The Fifties Flick "A Fifties Miami housewife with too much time on her hands" was how make-up artist Lucia Pieroni described the look at Jonathan Saunders this season. Think Adele's cat-like lined eyes but with double the volume. Go thick on the flick, and upturn towards your temples.

Get the look: Apply Max Factor's Glide and Define Liquid Liner, £6.99 (boots.com), to the upper lash line in feathery strokes. Then retrace your steps, building a thick line and an upswing.
