Home is…?

West Hampstead. We lived in Kilburn, then we had children and decided we’d had just about enough of ‘keeping it real’.

Last play you saw?

The Sunshine Boys with Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths. It was terrific. Two strong performances and a great script.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

My local. I’m not a member of any of those Soho clubs, they’re too far away and they’re full of tosspots.

Best for a first date?

A big, noisy West End pub.

First thing you do when you arrive back in London?

Go to my favourite local, the Black Lion in Hampstead. It does a good Sunday roast.

Favourite shops?

I tend to get all my clothes from very boring places like M&S and Next. Hamleys is full of screaming kids and I have two of my own at home.

Best meal?

I’ve had some nice meals in The Wolseley, and I’ve eaten in The Ivy a few times for special occasions. I’ll eat anything apart from sushi.

Earliest London memory?

A trip to London with a couple of great-aunts when I was seven. We went to one of those touristy, rip-off restaurants where they did something posh with the steak so I couldn’t eat it.

Best building to live in?

A big, comfy house in North London that you would associate with the shires. I won’t hold my breath, though.

At the moment you are…

Looking forward to the release of the very sweet and funny The Wedding Video. With me in it! And filming the new series of Peep Show — it’s like putting on a familiar pair of (rude) trousers.

What would you do as Mayor for the day?

I’d probably have myself arrested before I did anything.

Favourite pub?

The World’s End in Camden.It’s huge, with great big windows and the light streaming in. Drinking while the sun’s out feels naughty.

Which building would you like to be locked in overnight?

A locksmith’s.

Best thing a London cabbie has said to you?

‘Do you mind if I don’t talk to you?’ Sadly, they’ve never said it.

Have you ever had a run-in with a London policeman?

No, the closest I’ve ever come was being told not to ride my bike on the pavement when I was about nine and that was in Lincolnshire where you were supposed to take your chances on the road.
