Dressing up with Jerry Hall

I’ve been painted six times by Andy Warhol and twice by Lucian Freud. I was eight months pregnant when I sat for Lucian, so we had to be quick. I could have popped at any minute.

Irving Penn is the best photographer I’ve worked with. How he made my cheekbones look put him in a league of his own.

I first worked with David Bailey when I was 19. He still takes wonderful pictures; he’s just not as cute as he used to be.

Growing up in Texas, the big entertainment was rodeo so jeans were our staple. These days I like Levi’s 501s, or the Hudson jeans my daughter Georgia May designed.

My philosophy is ‘Yes, but more’. I’ve lived by that and it’s been a lot of fun, although it sometimes gets me into trouble.

My mother, Marjorie Hall, was a real glamourpuss. She loved Hollywood movies, so I grew up watching Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford. They inspired my wardrobe.

When I was 16 she sent me to Europe. She’d been watching To Catch a Thief and said the South of France was the place to go. I only had a floor-length red leopard-print dress, in skintight silk. It flared at the knees and had a tiny belt with rhinestone lips.

I’d been on a beach for ten minutes when I was spotted by a modelling agent. Before I knew it I was working with Helmut Newton and was on the cover of French Vogue.

The older you get, the more glamorous you have to be. My mother died at 88, still wearing green chiffon dresses with her hair done up in a classic shell.

The secret to ageing well is to sleep ten hours a night and be friends with lots of young people.

I love mooching around the house in Richmond with my daughters. We have matching Victoria’s Secret silk pyjamas, and we wear them around the Aga with a cup of tea.
