When Bardot celebrated her retirement from the film business with a lunch at Club 55 in 1974, she attacked the 'invaders' who had polluted her Eden and declared: 'It's no longer the St Tropez I knew.' But the loss of Bardot's imprimatur made no difference to the popularity of Pampelonne. Today it attracts celebrities such as Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Moss, Jemima Khan, Victoria Beckham and Bruce Willis, and, of course, a decent leaven of European millionaires who have made the Riviera their summer playground. The line-up of beach-hut venues includes Balligand's Aqua Club, Nikki Beach, Bora Bora, Cabane Bambou and Tahiti. Between them they employ around 800 people.
