Zeppelin returns to skies over London

A Zeppelin will be flying over London this summer on the 90th anniversary of the last airship bomb raid on the capital.

German company Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik is to operate commercial tourist flights for six weeks from 10 July to 21 August.

The NT07 airship will carry 12 passengers at a time on five flights a day over the capital's landmarks, flying at around 2,000 feet.

Zeppelins carried out dozens of bombing raids on London and other towns and cities in eastern England during the First World War, resulting in 550 deaths. The last raid was on 5 August 1918.

The tours, which will start at Damyns Hall Airfield in Upminster, cost £185 for half an hour, £295 for 45 minutes and £360 for an hour.

All 12 passengers will get a window seat.

The 250ft-long airship is filled with non-inflammable helium, unlike its larger predecessor, the Hindenburg, which crashed in America in 1937 when its hydrogen-filled frame ignited, killing 35 of its 97 passengers.

This summer's venture is being sponsored by Stella Artois and promoted by former Apprentice candidate Rory Laing.

The venture will depend on the weather. The airship cannot be flown during heavy winds, thunderstorms or fog, hence July and August were selected for the flights.
