'Winona changed her story'

Winona Ryder dramatically changed her "movie role" story after she was arrested for shoplifting, a court in the US was told.

A store detective at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills said that when the Hollywood star was first stopped for allegedly walking out with designer items, she claimed she was preparing for a role in a movie called Shopgirl. But when police arrived, she told them she was to appear in a film called White Jazz.

Detective Colleen Rainey told Beverly Hills Superior Court: "She said it was going to be a police crime drama where she would be playing a shoplifter."

Prosecutors read out a list of 20 designer items worth £3,700 the 31-year-old actress is accused of stealing.

Rainey refuted claims by Ryder's lawyer, Mark Geragos, that the actress had her blouse lifted up by security staff searching for other merchandise. Ryder, who was accompanied to court by her parents, denies grand theft, burglary and vandalism. The trial continues.
