Why everyone wants 'a Kirsty'

Every hairdresser will tell you it's their worst nightmare: the customer who walks in clutching a photograph of their favourite model or film star and insists, "I want to look like that."

There is little chance they will leave the salon bearing any resemblance to Catherine Zeta Jones or Jennifer Lopez - but that will never stop women trying.

Indeed, a nationwide survey of styles across the country shows the trend for celebrity hairstyles is growing, and the choice varies from region to region.

Two years ago, we could barely move for "Rachels" - the choppy bob made famous by Friends star Jennifer Aniston.

These days, says the survey, published today in this week's Now magazine, Channel 5 newsreader Kirsty Young's sliced bob and Madonna's layered waves have been added to the hairdresser's portfolio.

In London, the Kirsty Young reigns supreme. Gerald Monoghan, of Daniel Galvin, said the capital's women prefer the look because it is "smooth and sleek with loads of body and shine" but takes only 15 minutes' styling time - which is low maintenance compared to other glamour cuts.

Women in Oxford obviously have more time on their hands. They opt for Liz Hurley's luxurious sweeping fringe, even though it takes 40 minutes to style.

Manchester has been conquered by the wife of the city's favourite footballer. Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Collinge said: "Victoria Beckham's hair is looking great at the moment and our clients love it."

And Madonna's wavy locks are all the rage in Hull.
