What's tops about London

Some are obvious, others rather less so. A new survey has revealed the top 80 attractions London has to offer, and the entries include everything from the Notting Hill Carnival to dog tracks.

Among the favourites are the usual galleries, theatres and parks. But other entries are off the tourist trail, such as Walthamstow Stadium, the Columbia Road flower market and Hampstead Heath.

The list was compiled from a London Underground survey, Unlocking London. People logging on to LU's website were invited to vote for their favourites in eight categories, including most stunning scenery, best family entertainment and best outings. Almost 6,000 responded in a week.

The view from the London Eye is the current leader in the stunning scenery stakes, followed by Hampstead Heath and the panoramic view of the capital from the top of Primrose Hill. Tate Modern is a hot favourite on the world-class culture list.

Best-loved in the entertainment for everyone category are London Zoo, Covent Garden and Madame Tussaud's. The best unusual and unique attractions include the massed blooms at Columbia Road, the gastronomic delights of Borough market, and the sari silks and curries of Brick Lane.

The best outings include a meander around Hyde Park, a day in the stands at Arsenal and a trip to Richmond Park to see the wild deer. Walthamstow and Wimbledon dog tracks are both in the top 10.

Other categories include best destinations for foodies; best clubs and music venues and best free events, in which the London Marathon was listed as well as the Notting Hill Carnival and the Pride March.

Voting is still open and the winner of each category will be decided later this week. Winners will each get a "Loved by London" plaque.

Richard Parry, LU's director of marketing and planning, said: "We aim to produce a true insiders' guide - whether it's where to spend a sunny afternoon, or where best to hit the town on a Friday night."
