Wham! another musical!

They were the band that defined the early Eighties - and now the boys from Wham! could be coming back. George Michael has revealed that plans are afoot to stage Wham! - The Musical. The singer, currently at No1 in the album charts, says he and former partner Andrew Ridgley are sifting through offers from producers to make a show incorporating hits such as Wham Rap, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Club Tropicana.

A show based on the rise of two north London schoolfriends who became famous is sure to be a hit. It follows a string of musicals based on the work of pop stars including Abba (Mamma Mia), Rod Stewart (Tonight's The Night) and Queen (We Will Rock You).

Michael, 40, said that he hates the idea of it creatively because it would be too "cheesy". But he has resigned himself to the fact that many Wham! fans would love it.

He said: "Two or three different producers have approached Andrew and I about this and I'm a bit torn. I absolutely hate the idea on a creative level. But on another level I know that a certain generation of people would love it."

Michael told Heart 106.2 FM he was nervous at the thought of stageschool students hamming up his early numbers.

He said: "Those songs are borderline in terms of presentation, and the only reason we got away with the pastiche of them is because they were done with so much conviction and big hair and big teeth, and genuine fun and passion.

"But the truth is that done on stage there will be no charm and you'll be left with a lot of cheese, so I'm torn."

He added: "Am I being too much of a snob? I would literally have to avoid the premiere."
