We will rock you

I should have guessed from its name that dressing up for Fashion Rocks would entail more than simply donning a cocktail dress and applying an extra slick of lipgloss.

No, it required rocks - oodles of them, as they say in SW1. This was one night where diamonds really were a girl's best friend.

It's a tough call choosing which celebrity was the most bling. I suppose the award would have to go to commère Elizabeth Hurley, who, alongside her 17 (18? 19? Even with a pen and paper handy, I still managed to lose count) outfit changes, wore a selection of diamonds by Chopard, including an oval-shaped pendant with an extraordinary 130 carats.

Coming a close second was model/actress/singer (the third one is debatable) Milla Jovovich, who performed for Prada in a red 1950s prom dress accessorised with a neck-piece by Moussaieff. Minnie Driver came third with £1 million worth of diamonds from De Beers, including a large eight-carat marquise diamond ring and pear-drop earrings.

But, despite what J-Lo might tell us, it's not all about showing out in the most expensive rocks. Style has to come into it too. Some of the most striking diamonds were worn by Skin, who chose a rhombusshaped pendant by Madonna's favourite jeweller, Stephen Webster. It incorporated a Star 129 rock, which has 129 facets instead of the usual 58. Naomi Campbell wore a similar piece at the event.

As always, it was left to the most eccentric woman in pop to pull off the most eyestopping look of the night. Bjork covered her face - not in diamonds, but in equally sparkling Swarovski crystals - for her performance with Alexander McQueen, yet still managed to sing like an angel.

As for me, well, my heart-shaped "diamond" locket garnered a few compliments itself, despite being only £15 from M&S.
