We will learn from 'British Fritzl' case, vows Brown

GORDON Brown today pledged any necessary changes to the system would be made following the "unspeakable" abuse carried out by a father who raped his two daughters over a period spanning more than a quarter of a century.

The father - dubbed the "British Fritzl" after the Austrian who imprisoned his daughter and fathered eight children by her - was yesterday jailed for life at Sheffield crown court. Mr Brown said a review was being carried out into the case, which had left the public "outraged". At Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Brown said: "People will rightly want to know how such abuse could go on for so long."

Sheffield social services have announced an independent review into the case of the 56-year-old rapist who fathered seven children with his two daughters. The man was given 25 life sentences and ordered to serve a minimum of 19-and-a-half years before he is considered for release.
