We need a London Spring to defeat these Stalinist lunatics

What seems evident is that Westminster council has no regard for the fact that we're in a financial crisis.

It does not understand that everything must be done to improve business profit with no unnecessary spending of public money.

An example of its ignorance of the latter is the re-routing of traffic on the Piccadilly/Pall Mall block.

All that was needed was a few standard signs, most of which I imagine can be easily purchased. Couldn't most of the poles that carried the old signs have been used for the new ones? An outrageous cost would have been £100,000. The reported cost? Millions.

This was squandered on, among other things, pointless stone road dividers. It is this breathtaking fiscal incompetence that sends them running to that old cash cow, the vehicle user. We're told that it's not for the money but we know that it is.

They say that traffic in the evening and on Sundays is too heavy and that parking restrictions must be imposed. As someone who has been driving in London for more than 40 years, I can tell you that slow traffic in central London is caused by bad phasing of traffic lights, roadworks, the perilous rickshaw and bad road design; many impediments placed by that car-hater and squanderer of public coffers, Ken Livingstone.

That Westminster council should add to the difficulties of business and place impediments on how people want to travel is positively Soviet. What a responsible council would do is reinstate all the single yellow lines that have been made double - welcome people to the West End, make it easy for them to have fun and don't make life hell for those who help them to have it.

Colin Barrow, architect of this hellish design, is reported as having said "late-night workers who say they will not be able to pay the charges, their total numbers were limited" and "the number not able to use the car parks or night buses, not able to park near their workplace and who can't afford to pay must be quite small".

He also states an indifference "even if businesses such as restaurants, bars and casinos suffer loss of business". How wonderfully Stalinist. It's also wrong.

A huge number of people will be affected; a lot of them elderly, afraid to travel late at night on public transport.

There was of course "consultation". The majority said they didn't want it but, said transport official Barry Smith, "it's not policy making by X Factor". More public money thrown away on the consultation since quite obviously it made no difference what it revealed; like Livingstone and the congestion charge extension. The decision was made. The Kremlin strikes again!

We're having an Arab Spring; it's time now for a London Spring. Such politicians rely on public apathy. Londoners must not let them get away with this. It's time to rally the forces.

What politicians can't bear to accept is that people are rather good at regulating their own lives. The congestion charge was announced because "traffic levels had reached an unsustainable level".

Actually they were lower than they had been sometime previously. People regulate themselves - the traffic does reach an unacceptable level of density and people decide to use public transport. After a while they tire of the hassle and think they'll try the car again. They then find that actually, it's not so bad - and they're right, it isn't, because so many of them are now on the bus.

In time they return to their cars, the density builds, and they go back to the bus - and so on. The same will happen with West End traffic in the evening. We manage our own lives.

It really depresses me that I'm doing this. Why isn't the business community making its enormous power felt? Why isn't Boris? Why isn't David Cameron? Surely the Government should be protecting us from lunatic local authorities?

This must not be allowed; it is the thin end of the wedge. Camden, Kensington and Chelsea et al are rubbing their hands in anticipation.
