Warning of winter power cuts crisis

Britain faces an increased number of power cuts this winter because of a lack of generating capacity, says a trade union.

According to Amicus, the country can expect blackouts if the winter is one of the coldest in recent years, as forecast.

The union's leaders have joined those from the National Union of Mineworkers to call on the Government to review Britain's energy needs and make a fresh investment in coal-fired power stations to address the problem.

But a Department of Trade spokesman accused the union of "scaremongering".
