Semiconductor makers were lifted in part by a measured endorsement from investment firm Goldman Sachs. Intel rose 33 cents or 2% to $17.81, Applied Materials firmed 91 cents or 6% to $14.32 and Novellus, which makes equipment to manufacture chips, was up 30 cents or 1.2% at $24.60. Conglomerate Tyco International, which on Thursday vigorously denied that it was facing a cash shortage, leapt $3.78 or 46% to $12.03 after it named Motorola president Edward Breen as its new chief executive officer and chairman. Motorola slid $1.28 or 11% to $10.90.
