Victoria is the new nightmare Tube line

The Victoria and Jubilee lines top a new London Underground "league of shame" based on customer complaints.

Hundreds of commuters lodged official complaints about late-running trains, suspended services and breakdowns in the latest monthly survey.

The Victoria line drew 317 complaints while the Jubilee line was the subject of 331 complaints.

Val Shawcross, leader of the London Assembly transport committee, who uncovered the latest complaint figures, has joined forces with London Travel Watch to voice "concern" over Victoria line performance. She said: "It is the new nightmare line." The figures cover part of the pre-Christmas period, which recorded the worst month on record for overall Tube performance.

Thousands had to be led from stranded trains on routes across the network.

About half the old stock of 46 Victoria line trains has been replaced by new carriages and engines in a £900 million upgrade of the line. The upgrade is due for completion by the spring of next year.

The trains were not tested properly before coming into service and have repeatedly broken down, mainly suffering door problems but also struggling with faults with the on-board computers. Ms Shawcross added: "We just don't know how long passengers will have to suffer this uncertainty."

She called on both Mayor Boris Johnson and Tube bosses to "get on top of the problem".

Mike Brown, LU managing director, said the problems resulted from the "absolutely flawed" contract held by Metronet, the failed maintenance giant which supplied the new trains. Metronet went bust three years ago with its work taken over by TfL.

Mr Brown said the Victoria line contract was one of the principal reasons TfL was so critical of Metronet. He said the trains are safe but had not been operated on a test track. He was confident of a general improvement in line performance "very soon".
