The majority of states have voted the same way since 1984 and are thus considered safe Democrat or Republican states; Mr Trump is likely to win Idaho (four votes) because the population of Idaho have voted for the Republican candidate in every election since 1968.
The swing states are those states which have never voted reliably for the Democrat or Republican candidate from one election to the next. These include: Florida (29 votes), Georgia (16 votes), and Iowa (six votes).
Watch the animation above to see how many electoral votes are up for grabs, and how many of each of these states Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump need to win to secure victory.
