Uri drives TV viewers around the bend

Psychic Uri Geller's spell over the British public was broken when hundreds of thousands of viewers voted him off ITV1's celebrity jungle gameshow.

They decided to get rid of the spoonbender after a week on I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here.

His gems included: "I'm in touch with nature and the jungle", "I'm feeling the vibrations of the universe out here", and eventually "Nell ( McAndrew), if you want to do something for me, I'm ready".

The last phrase was one of several episodes that caused suspicion that Geller, 55, was becoming a letch. He had earlier laid his healing hands on It Girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

However, he found solace in correctly predicting his eviction from the Australian rainforest saying he felt "flattered" to be the first of the eight celebrities to be voted off.

Geller's other televised gaffes over the week included droning on about wearing his Exeter City football top.

He is co-chairman of the Third Division club. He said he wore it as a mark of respect to best friend Michael Jackson, an honorary director of the club, whose birthday it was, only to get the day wrong. Geller also failed in an attempt to stop the rain by dancing and chanting.

After news of his eviction, Geller's teenage daughter, Natalie, speaking from the family's Berkshire home, said: "Dad is going to stay out there at the hotel until the end of the shows so he and my mum [Hanna] will be able to enjoy some time together in luxury. They are bound to have an awful lot to discuss after what has happened on the show in the past week."

Hanna was reported to have been reduced to tears last week when Uri ogled model Nell McAndrew.

Last night's first eviction marked the end of an enlightening week for the eight B-listers marooned in the Queensland jungle. Apart from their somewhat predictable agreement that they had all learned something about themselves, the public have also learned some home truths about them.

Most entertaining was Darren Day's almost tearful admission that he had been preyed on by Palmer-Tomkinson. Day, 34, claimed she had been sending him naughty notes propositioning him for sex.

The singer, who came second to Geller in the public vote, has flirted with Palmer-Tomkinson from the start of the show, but in recent days they have had a string of arguments - fuelled mainly by Day's flatulence.

Day explained the real reason behind their tense exchanges in a conversation with fellow contestants Nigel Benn and Christine Hamilton.

"The reason we have been arguing is because Tara has been sending me notes all week saying 'I can't wait to get you back to the hotel," he claimed. The singer told them he would turn her down flat because he was devoted to his dancer girlfriend.
