He moved to a wheelchair; an electronic aid in his diaphragm enabled him to breathe more or less normally. One unforgettable day, in bed with Dana at home near New York, he realised he could feel her touch on his leg. Six years after the accident he wrote this about his daily life: "I wake up at about 6.30am, feeling more like stone than flesh because I've lain rigid all night. I use the hour between then and when Dana gets up to adjust between my dreams and the reality of my situation. I've never been disabled in my dreams - I'm sailing, riding, travelling, making films."
