Unarmed Pcs overpower gunman who shot at them

Two Pcs overpowered and arrested a gunman who shot at them during a foot chase today.

The policeman and a woman special constable were pursuing a suspect, whom they did not know was armed, down an alley in Tulse Hill

When they cornered the man, he pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired a shot which narrowly missed the officers. They then caught the gunman in the car park of the Tulse Hill tavern and held him until back-up arrived. The gunman had fled a Ford Focus stopped by the officers who had been on a routine patrol with another officer at about 8.15am.

Police said the two Pcs, aged 27 and 32, have six years' service and the special constable about six months.

Acting borough commander for Lambeth Alistair Sutherland said: "Today's incident highlights the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the work officers do every day. Thankfully the officers involved were not injured and after being shot at had shown great bravery and dedication to continue to not only chase the suspect but also arrest him."

Two men are being questioned. A handgun was recovered from the scene.
