KPMG, the latest household name to admit to questionable figures in its accounts, will be desperate to avoid the fate of Arthur Andersen, auditor to fraud-riddled energy group Enron and WorldCom, the disgraced telecoms company. Like KPMG, Andersen was among the top six accountancy firms in the world, but Andersen is now in a state of disintegration. It has been shattered by an exodus of clients and by civil and criminal proceedings launched by those who believe it was negligent or worse in signing Enron and WorldCom accounts instead of blowing the whistle on their financial manoeuvring.
