UK road signs may go metric

A signal that signs on Britain's roads will eventually be converted to metres and kilometres was given by ministers today.

In the Commons, roads minister David Jamieson was asked by Labour MP Parmjit Dhanda when the change would take place. He said imperial measures could be abolished in future, but only when enough drivers were familiar with metric units.

Britain has an opt-out from EU rules which insist on metric measures being shown throughout the EU.
