Two children hurt in freak lorry accident

A lorry driver has been arrested after a freak accident left two children with severe head injuries.

The incident happened when the children's mother was pushing her daughter aged six on a bicycle on the pavement with her five-year-old son by their side. They were struck by the arm of a crane on the back of a lorry as it drove past.

The children's mother escaped serious injury. The 43-year-old driver of the HGV stopped immediately after the accident in Horley, Surrey, on Wednesday afternoon.

A Surrey police spokeswoman said the children's injuries were "potentially life-threatening but stable". They are being treated at St George's Hospital in Tooting.
