We are so fickle about exercise and losing weight that, according to the latest figures, we often quit get-fit routines or diets within a month of starting them. Which is why there are more and more bizarre routines and gadgets designed to boost even the most jaded of us. But do they work, or are they expensive gimmicks?

Weight-loss spray

You can "spray off" extra pounds, if the claims of a new slimming mist are to be believed. Designed to be sprayed into the mouth for direct and fast absorption, Slim-Mist, costing £24.99, contains nutrients such as chromium and B-vitamins which aim to dampen sugar and food cravings. The makers say it tricks the body into thinking the calories in the blood stream are more than enough.
Good or gimmick? It might help to regulate your appetite but won't do the workout for you.

Ice climbing

Vertical Chill, Ellis Brigham's ice wall in Covent Garden, is an eight-metre block of ice enclosed in a chilled cubicle running between two floors. With a pickaxe in each hand, you repeatedly pitch yourself higher by stabbing at the ice and raising yourself up, digging crampons into the face as you ascend.
Good or gimmick? It's a great one-off experience and a brilliant intro to a very serious sport.

Cellulite cycling cube

The latest cellulite-busting gimmick involves sealing yourself from the waist downwards into an air-tight chamber containing a cycling machine. As you cycle, the vacuum sucks blood into the fatty tissue in the hips, buttocks and thighs. This accelerates fat and cellulite breakdown which are allegedly burned off for good.
Good or gimmick? It's likely to help but you can't guarantee cellulite won't return.

Rope yoga

It's the closest thing to a modern-day stretching rack - only you're meant to relax into it and enjoy. Rope yoga, the latest yoga fad from LA, involves placing your hands and feet in straps and stretching your body using a pulley system. It's designed to stretch and use the muscles of the abdomen to the maximum, without engaging the lower back and hip flexors which may otherwise be strained.
Good or gimmick? Another version on a yoga class - good, but still a bit of a gimmick.

Stress clogs

IKO clogs claim to reduce physical and psychological stress by removing static electricity from the body. Static builds up whenever we come into contact with charged particles on carpets or other surfaces. This can cause muscular tension and feelings of stress. The soles of the clogs contain orthopaedic insteps and are made from polyurethane, which draws static away from the body. Made in Sweden, the clogs cost £45 to £75.

Good or gimmick? They sound like a gimmick but IKO clogs look and feel good - and have evidence to support their claims.
