Train overcrowding 'breaching rules'

The Government's transport plan will come under fresh criticism next week when a report will reveal that overcrowding on many commuter lines serving the capital far exceeds what is allowed.

This is despite the fact that passengers standing brings an increased risks of casualties in the event of a crash.

The report by the Strategic Rail Authority is understood to single out conditions on South Central, the company which took over from Connex and which includes the Brighton line, as being particularly bad. Connex South Eastern and South West Trains are also expected to be criticised for high levels of overcrowding.

The companies carry more than half the total number of rail commuters entering London every day. They admit that overcrowding will continue as passenger numbers increase but say there is not enough room on the tracks to increase services.

This has led Connex to explore using a new style of Metro-type train with fewer seats and more standing room.
