Towers 'will blight David Cameron's house'

Residents of the area where David and Samantha Cameron have their family home have condemned "horrific" plans for 30-storey tower blocks that will overlook their gardens.

They claim the three 100-metre-high buildings, part of a regeneration of White City backed by Boris Johnson, will blight a swathe of quiet Edwardian streets in North Kensington, including a conservation zone.

Nicki Grinling, 43, who lives in the St Quintin Estate in North Kensington, said locals were furious at the "underhand way" the plans had been handled: "We've always had fantastic vistas to the west, we see the beautiful sunsets and get lots of light. None of the buildings are higher than two storeys. It has always been the charm of this area, you don't feel like you're in central London.

"Suddenly we are going to get these enormous buildings. This will spoil the character of the area." The Camerons have lived in the area since 1994 and their £1.5 million house is being rented out while they are in Downing Street. Other well-known locals include broadcaster Ben Fogle and Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton.

The towers next to the A40 Westway are in a masterplan for White City unveiled by Hammersmith and Fulham council. It includes a new £100 million campus for Imperial College postgraduate students on the former BBC Woodlands site, and the redevelopment of the listed BBC Television Centre.

The masterplan claims the locations of the towers "have been selected to limit the impact of overshadowing on existing and future communities." A Hammersmith & Fulham Council spokesman said: "White City has potential to create up to 10,000 jobs and 4,500 new homes in an area where they are desperately needed.

We are in consultation and are keen to hear the views of residents. We will take comments on board and come back with a further round of consultation in autumn."
