Tory moneymen: Who supports who

Threats from Tory donors to stop funding the party have become nails for Iain Duncan Smith's coffin. But who are the Conservatives' main money men? (No women are on the list.) And what is their view of the party leader?

Stuart Wheeler
Founder of IG Index spread betting firm.
Amount given: £5million at last general election in 2001.
Attitude: warned last week he will give no more money until IDS goes. He said: "The case for change is overwhelming."

John Majedski
Chairman of Reading FC.
Amount given: £82,300 since 2001.
Attitude: another who wants IDS out, claiming a leadership contest would "clear the air".

Sir Stanley Kalms
Dixons chairman and former Tory treasurer.
Amount given: reportedly £500,000 in first few months of IDS's leadership, then £160,000 last year, dropping to £10,000 this year.
Attitude: has kept his powder dry since resigning as treasurer this summer, but he is thought to be unhappy with IDS's stewardship.

Irvine Laidlaw
Monaco-based Scottish businessman with personal fortune of £500million. Amount given: unknown, but he is understood to be a "very generous" contributor.
Attitude: hit out at plotters but said a vote of confidence "might not be a bad way to go" for IDS. Backed Michael Portillo for leadership in 2001.

Sir Tom Cowie
Founder of Arriva bus company.
Amount given: £50,000 this year.
Attitude: reported as claiming IDS had neither "the ability nor the charisma to compete against Tony Blair".

Lord Ashcroft
Businessman and former Tory treasurer.
Amount given: at least £1 million - plus £2 million in loans.
Attitude: denounced plotters as "back-stabbers" who have plunged the party into an "appalling" mess. Has called for Tories to "rally round IDS's banner".

Lord Harris
Chairman of Carpetright chain and former Tory treasurer.
Amount given: wrote off £525,000 loan in October 2002.
Attitude: thought to be loyal to IDS - but with reservations.

Sir Michael Bishop
Chairman of BMI British Midland.
Amount given: unknown.
Attitude: more trouble for IDS. He warned yesterday: "There will be a restraint on donations being given until this matter is sorted out."

George Magan
Banker and current Tory treasurer.
Amount given: £100,000 last year. Reportedly contributed £1 million this year to £4 million loan, to be repaid at undisclosed interest rate.
Attitude: loyal.

Johan Eliasch
Swedish sport tycoon. Current deputy Tory treasurer.
Amount given: like his boss, reportedly contributed £1 million this year to a £4 million loan, repayable at an undisclosed rate of interest.
Attitude: loyal.

Lord Kirkham
Founder of DFS furniture chain.
Amount given: £105,000 last year.
Attitude: unknown.
