Tory councillor who had ‘Cameron Cutie’ affair faces axe

A Tory councillor who had an affair with new MP Caroline Nokes faces being disqualified from his council position because he has not attended meetings for almost six months.

James Dinsdale, 27, who had a four-year relationship with "Cameron Cutie" Ms Nokes, 37, will lose his seat on Bury St Edmunds town council if he does not attend a full council meeting this month.

Rules state that if a councillor fails to attend meetings for six months they are no longer eligible to hold the position.

The meeting on July 28 is the last chance for Mr Dinsdale, who represents Westgate, to attend.

David Nettleton, chairman of the council's finance policy and resources committee, said: "My concern is that there would then be a by-election. We would then be spending between £2,000 and £3,000 on a by-election we don't need, that could more profitably be spent on our constituents."

Mr Dinsdale, who lives in Bury with his parents, has been sent a reminder by the town council to attend.

Chairman Bob Cockle said: "There are certain standards that have to be maintained and if you break those standards you have to face the consequences.

"I have seen James Dinsdale in action and arguing his point and I still think he's a good councillor."

Chris Turner, chairman of Bury St Edmunds Conservative Association, said Mr Dinsdale tried his hardest to get back from work in Cambridge to attend meetings.

Mr Turner said: "As far as I'm aware he's been working hard as a ward councillor. I'm sure he will make every effort to be there."

Mr Dinsdale was not available for comment.
