Tories plan to get tough on migrants

The Conservatives today announced a raft of tough measures to tighten Britain's immigration system.

Shadow home secretary David Davis said his five-point plan would stamp out the abuse of immigration rules. He said the proposals would control the numbers coming to Britain to work, as well as clamping down on visa fraud. The Tories would close "gaps" in the migration system

by ensuring all points of entry into the UK were manned round the clock by officials.

There would be tighter controls on work permits, with the number granted determined by economic need. The right of permanent residency for anyone who has worked in the UK for more than four years would be axed.
