Top lawyer's Camp X-Ray challenge

America's former top law officer will lead the first attempt today to challenge the right of US armed forces to detain prisoners at Camp X-Ray in Cuba.

A judge in California has agreed to hear a writ of habeas corpus brought on behalf of 110 captives by former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and a group of human rights lawyers.

The petition demands that the US brings the suspects before a civilian court and outlines the charges against them. It also accuses the US of violating the American constitution and Geneva Convention on prisoners of war.

Erwin Chemerinsky, for the group, said: "These individuals were brought out of their countries in shackles. Someone should be answering their rights under international law."
