Top ethnic officer sent for trial

One of Scotland Yard's most senior ethnic minority officers was today sent for trial at the Old Bailey accused of perverting the course of justice and "misconduct in a public office".

Superintendent Ali Dizaei was appearing in court for the first time and also faced eight charges of providing false information in regard to mileage claims. He will appear at the Old Bailey on 18 February - when it is understood he will deny the charges of misconduct and perverting the course of justice.

Mr Dizaei will appear at Horseferry Road magistrates' court the day after, when he will be committed on the mileage charges.

Leaving Horseferry Road today, his solicitor said: "These matters are going to be defended strenuously."
