Nutritional labelling can be daunting: it must by law show either four or eight elements: calories, fat, protein and carbohydrates or, additionally, sugar, fibre, saturated fat and sodium. Sodium is multiplied by 2.5 for salt content. You then need to relate these figures to your ideal daily intake: for the average woman between 19 and 50, this is 1,940 calories. The recommended salt intake is 6g; fat consumption 70g and saturated fats - implicated in heart disease - no more than a third of that.
